Difference between Base Directory and Global Directory
In PostgreSQL, both theΒ Base DirectoryΒ and theΒ Global DirectoryΒ reside within theΒ PGDATAΒ (the data cluster) folder. The primary difference lies in theΒ scopeΒ andΒ type of dataΒ they store.

1. The Global Directory (pg_global)
TheΒ globalΒ directory contains data that isΒ shared across the entire database cluster.
- Path:Β
$PGDATA/global/ - Scope:Β Cluster-wide.
- Contents:Β It stores “Shared System Catalogs.” These are tables that contain information applicable to every database in the instance.
- Key Files:
pg_database:Β Information about all databases in the cluster.pg_authid:Β User roles and passwords (since a user can log into any database in the cluster).pg_tablespace:Β Information about defined storage locations.
- Identification:Β Objects in this directory always have an OID (Object Identifier), but they do not belong to a specific database ID.

2. The Base Directory (pg_base)
TheΒ baseΒ directory contains theΒ actual user dataΒ and system catalogs that areΒ private to each specific database.
- Path:Β
$PGDATA/base/ - Scope:Β Database-specific.
- Structure:Β InsideΒ
base, there is a subdirectory for every database in the cluster, named after the database’s OID (e.g.,Β$PGDATA/base/16384/). - Contents:
- User Tables and Indexes:Β The actual data you insert into your tables.
- Local System Catalogs:Β Tables likeΒ
pg_class,Βpg_attribute, andΒpg_typeΒ which describe the structure of that specific database.
- Identification:Β If you want to find where a specific table is stored, you look inΒ
base/[Database OID]/[Table Filenode]
